Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel that goes back to the day the Locust Horde first attacked, Emergence Day. Set fourteen years before the first Gears of War, it follows a younger Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago in the opening hours of the war. About the Game
Gears of War: E-Day takes place on the planet Sera, shortly after the Pendulum Wars have ended. Humanity is in a fragile peace, and many soldiers have gone back to civilian life. The story is set in the industrial city of Kalona. When the Locust Horde erupts from underground, Marcus and Dom are pulled back into combat. They team up with Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes to form Bravo Squad.
The developers describe it as an origin story about Marcus and Dom’s friendship. Wikipedia reports the events span three days, moving from confusion and fear to the squad coming together and then desperation. The game also shows the early days of the Lancer assault rifle with its chainsaw bayonet.

Key Features
- Origin-story campaign. You play through Emergence Day itself, which earlier games only referred to. Players new to the series get a natural starting point, and longtime fans see how everything began.
- Co-op campaign. You can play alone, in two-player split-screen on console, or with up to four players online. Online co-op needs a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer, per Xbox.
- Darker, more horror-focused tone. Xbox says familiar enemies have been reworked and new creatures added. Expect a scarier atmosphere than a pure action game.
- Updated movement. Cover-based combat returns, now with new traversal such as sliding from a sprint, jumping gaps and climbing. This is meant to add freedom and vertical space to fights.
- Weapons. Returning favorites are reimagined, and new ones include the Gutpuncher grenade launcher and the Incinerator shotgun (Wikipedia).
- Horde Siege. This is a new co-op mode that Wikipedia says supports up to 12 players in three squads of four.
- Versus multiplayer. There are 4v4 matches on new maps, and Team Deathmatch and Conquest return.
- Unreal Engine 5. Xbox says the game targets 4K and up to 60 FPS. A compatible display is needed.
Gameplay and Player Experience
The foundation is the series’ cover shooting, with new movement layered on top. According to Wikipedia, the game also has destructible environments, so cover can be chipped away. It uses Active Reload and shell-by-shell reloading on some weapons. There’s also a more detailed gore system, which fits the mature-content warning on Steam (“frequent violence or gore”).
In Horde Siege, Wikipedia says you pick from four classes: Assault, Breacher, Marksman and Medic. You earn resources to build defenses and restock ammo, complete objectives, and extract after surviving waves. The 4v4 Versus modes use a redesigned control scheme, with cover on the A button.
I can’t speak to how any of this plays, because it’s drawn from the sources only. Xbox lists the ESRB rating as pending, so check it before buying if age ratings matter to you.

Platform and Availability
Xbox lists Xbox Series X|S and Windows 10/11 as the platforms. On PC, the game is listed on both the Microsoft Store and Steam. Buying through Xbox Play Anywhere lets you play on both console and PC at no extra cost. The game is also included with Game Pass from day one.
Editions listed by Xbox:
- Standard pre-order, with the Exfil Dom character skin and Exfil weapon skin set.
- Premium Edition, with up to 5 days of early access, the Bravo Squad Signature Weapon Pack, and five seasonal customization packs.
Prices weren’t visible in the sources, so check the official storefronts. Buy only from the official Xbox or Microsoft Store, or Steam.
