CONTROL Resonant Review: Story, Combat, Platforms and Price

In CONTROL Resonant, you leave the Oldest House and step into a warped Manhattan. You don’t play Jesse Faden this time. You play her brother, Dylan, who has spent years in confinement under the Federal Bureau of Control. The fighting also changes: Dylan’s main weapon is a shapeshifting melee weapon, so this sequel is built around close combat rather than a gun. If you liked the paranatural mystery of the first game, or you enjoy action games where your build changes how you fight, this one is worth a closer look.

About CONTROL Resonant

CONTROL Resonant is the sequel to Remedy’s 2019 game CONTROL. Its story picks up as a paranatural crisis spills out of the Oldest House and onto the streets of Manhattan. FBC Director Jesse Faden’s lockdown is no longer holding, and a mysterious cosmic entity is altering basic parts of reality.

Dylan Faden is released from FBC confinement and sent to fight back. Along the way he also looks for his sister, Jesse. The threats include the Hiss, the Mold, and other paranatural dangers, and the city itself is distorted, with gravity anomalies that bend the world vertically and horizontally.

The official pages don’t say whether you need to have played the first game. Wikipedia reports that Remedy wanted the story to stay accessible to newcomers, but that comes from interviews and isn’t stated on the store pages.

Key Features

  • A warped Manhattan to explore. You move through multiple areas of a ravaged city rather than one building. Gravity anomalies affect puzzles and combat, so terrain matters when you fight.
  • A shapeshifting melee weapon, the Aberrant. It changes form on demand. The official pages name a two-handed hammer and dual blades as examples, so you can switch between heavy hits and fast attacks.
  • Elemental abilities and the environment. Combat isn’t only about the weapon; you can also use elemental powers and your surroundings.
  • A progression system. Steam and PlayStation describe a “deep progression system” and choices that shape how Dylan’s abilities grow, so two players may build him differently.
  • A story tied to the first game. Dylan’s search for Jesse connects directly to the events of CONTROL (2019).
  • Adjustable difficulty and accessibility options. On PS5 you can set the challenge level or turn on individual assists, and fully remap controls.

Gameplay and Player Experience

The official descriptions focus on three things: fighting, exploring, and growing stronger.

Combat is melee-first. The Aberrant swaps between forms, and you mix it with elemental abilities and the environment. This is a change from the original game’s third-person shooting, according to Wikipedia.

Exploration takes place in large “expansive zones.” Wikipedia quotes the lead gameplay designer describing them as large, distinct zones with side activities and optional discoveries, and not as a traditional open world.

Progression lets you shape Dylan’s abilities. Wikipedia adds, from developer interviews, that the game includes character statistics, talent trees, and customizable weapons.

Replaying: Remedy has published details about a New Game Plus mode on the PlayStation Blog. This guide doesn’t cover how it works.

The game is single-player. Steam lists it as single-player, and PlayStation shows one player.
